Making Mistakes

Humans inevitably make mistakes throughout their lives. But we shouldn’t let these mistakes define us. It is our responsibility to learn from our mistakes and grow as individuals. Growing up in a world that is immersed in the internet and social media, it can be quite difficult to grasp reality. You start to compare your life to those of others, which can be self-deprecating to one’s emotional state. Stress and anxiety start to kick in, and you begin to ask yourself, “have I done something wrong with my life?”

This question swirls in my mind day and night. As I constantly reflect on my past and the decisions I made, I begin to fear my past may catch up to my future. As we grow older, our lives change and grow in different ways. One might find themselves having a family or taking on a demanding job. So, we mature and start new lives and leave our past behind. However, it’s not always easy to leave one’s past behind. Bad memories tend to show up during the most stressful times in our lives. Often, bad memories and past mistakes lead to a personal judgment in character. Why do we do this?

In my experience, I’ve held myself back from reaching my full potential through a pessimistic thought process. I often tell myself that I’ll never be worthy of any praise from my peers. But the person I am today is not the person I was yesterday. My mistakes don’t define my goals in life and what I want to accomplish in the future. As a society, we can only hope to bring ourselves to a better state of being. It’s important to acknowledge past mistakes, but equally important is to avoid letting the past get in the way of the future.
