What I Saw in Syria by Declan Walsh

This article is about Declan Walsh, a reporter from New York Times, painted a visual story for us to have a peak at Syria's reality during war time in April, 2019. Syria was suffering from countless wars for five years long.

"War" seems like a unreachable word to us, in fact, I can't even imagine what would it feel like to live during war time. But for Syrians, bomb explosions and armed soilders were their daily view. I was deeply attracted by the topic and issue that this article had covered. This kind of topic was not just some you can talk about over dinner and get out with the next day, it's a severe issue that needs to be valued because someone out there was actually suffering from mental and physical pain.

Reading this story quite feels like reading an actual story book. I really love how he matches photos with audio explanations perfectly. The audio was record during his trip in Syria, which shows more authenticity for the story. Also, he put on clear road map to show the distance that he had traveled, and inserted in the appropriate time.

The photos were astonishing and authentic, which really gave the readers a good look of the real life in Syria. Declan wrote this article as if he was writing a diary for himself, which gave us the fist person perspective to look at the story, and it made it much easier to understand the main key point. Also, it was been written down according to a time line, which gives readers clearer picture for what happened first or next. After going through all the content, I felt like I was there in person, standing on the streets searching for silver ling.

In my opinion, the length of the story was too short. "What’s else?” was my first reaction after reading all the content, I was desperate to look for more. I think in the end of the story, he ended it too suddenly. Although he used a twist in the storyline, which gave the readers hope instead of sadness for Syrians, it still seemed too sudden. He should've have more content about hopes for Syrians, or maybe mention some other similar story for relevance. At the end of the article, it may help if they had some information for groups that helped recue or donations for Syria. In that case, it would be easier to help the victims, and also for raising awareness around the world.

The video content was a bit insufficient, it would've been more complete if they had made a full documentary ( but not for too long). Interview with some residents would help get better picture of their lives. But under strict conditions like war time, I think Declan did the best he could.

All in all, this is a great multimedia package. I absolutely love Declan's work on this kind of topic. It's the best and quickest way to have a rough idea about " lives during war time ".
