What is your policy?

This morning I was at an office to pay some bills, when I saw a big poster that said Honesty is the best policy.

This is ascribed to many people, but it seems the wide consensus is that it came from Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin..the man who discovered electricity and gave us the lightning rod, among other inventions, also gave us this dangerous quote.

It is fair to wonder why someone who was busy trying to make a name for himself, stopped to write this quote.

The story is that when he was developing the lightning rod, he needed someone to test that it was working. He needed volunteers to hold the rod in hand and stand on rooftops waiting for lightning to strike. Those who didn’t die of the high voltage, did of old age. As these were all illegal immigrants from across the border, no one really missed them. Except at party time. A guy called Donald started a rumour that Benji was cornering the market on tequila and going to start raising prices. This upset Benji no end and he wrote on many walls that this was fake news and in fact he had had no tequila himself for many a year.

Then the nation wanted to know where the Mexicans went, and they said that until they knew what was going on they would not allow him to stay in the country. Having no choice Benji confessed. This drew a huge cheer from coast to coast and soon people started finding and sending illegal immigrants for Benji to run his experiments. It was this endless supply that caused him to think that, if only he had been honest upfront they’d have probably included him on Mount Rushmore. Thus ‘Honesty is the best policy’.

But, I ask you, is this still true today?

Imagine: Your partner has lovingly cooked your favourite okra dish. Only, as cooking is not in his repertoire of rather limited skills, he mistook powdered jaggery for ground pepper. You have a bite and are asked: Darling, I made just enough for you. Did you like it?

Or Imagine: It’s the last day of the quarter, and it’s been a pretty bad one. Your boss comes up to you and asks ‘ I am thinking of promoting Juno, my dog, to be head of HR. What do you think?’

Or imagine: You’re walking out to open the Indian innings at the World Cup, with Kohli, and he asks ‘ Do you want to open the strike or should I?’

Makes you wonder right? Is honesty really the best policy?

What if there is something else out there, that we have all missed because no one told us about it. What if we have had ‘Honesty is the best policy’ blinkers our whole life and not know that were was a better option.

To save you time and effort, I did the research myself. Over many years and time zones, reading many google articles, talking to many homeless people, interviewing many newly weds and happily uncoupled ones I found the answer. What is it, you ask me?

Examine the evidence below:

Hope the lasagne is not burnt. HAHAHAHAHA

How was Vegas? HAHAHAHAHA

Have I lost weight? HAHAHAHAHA

Are Bollywood movies educational? HAHAHAHAHA

Do you love me? HAHAHAHAHA

Will we get good increments this year? HAHAHAHAHA

Will you look after my MIL? HAHAHAHAHA

The answer is clear. Honesty maybe a pretty decent policy, but the terms and conditions are pretty grim.

I am happy to share with you my favourite, and all round best, policy: Laughter.

Yes it turns out Laughter is not just the best medicine, it is also the best policy. Who knew. Except those people in Reader’s Digest. And they told us for years, but we all ignored them because we were taken in by Benji and his illegal immigrants.

I, therefore, proclaim on the last day of January, with no control of my senses that Laughter is the best policy. Honestly!
