Inception of a Niche

From broad ideas to niche ideas.

I wonder how many times per day someone types “finding your niche” into the Google search bar. I’m sure it’s quite often and likely growing due to the increasing number of both adults and tweens alike looking for ways to make extra money online or the desire to become an influencer.

Truth: I used to laugh at the job title, “content creator”. As it turns out, it’s a legit way to earn an income.

If you want to join the ranks of successful social media moguls, you have to find a niche… and it’s not all about you. The niche you are looking for is one that will appeal to a very specific group of people, who will hopefully become your future followers, readers, or viewers.

While I am not an expert on how to discover said niche within oneself, I can, however, make at least one suggestion.

Shine a new light from an old idea.

For example, let’s say that you want to start a travel blog.

Television producers alone have completely overdone this one. How many TV shows are in existence that involve traveling around the world to taste and discuss food and/or culture? How many social media accounts already cover this topic, heavily followed or not?

I don’t know the actual number of accounts, and I don’t care. But, if you were curious, the approximate number of posts currently on Instagram containing the following hashtags are as follows: #travel (455 million); #travelblogger (50.2 million); #traveltheworld (23.3 million); the list goes on.

The topic of travel has been thoroughly exhausted.

Another downside to this particular idea is that it appeals to basically everyone. You need to find something that doesn’t interest such a vast, generic group of people — in this case, the majority of the global population. If your idea is too broad, it probably doesn’t have a lot of potential to be unique.

If you want to create content using social media and turn it into something marketable, you’re going to have to dig deep and find that niche within a niche within a niche.

Consider a new perspective of a tired topic.

Just an idea.
