5 Hiking Trails for Beginners in Fort Collins

Overlook trail is the number one most obvious trail in Fort Collins. It is extremely easy to find as it is right at the entrance of Horsetooth Reservoir. Based on my personal experience, I love this trail because of the prairie dogs… they are scattered around the trail and so fun to watch! The app “All Trails” has Overlook Trail rated as easy, and it’s rated four out of five stars on the site. It seems that the only reason it is not rated as five stars, is because the trail has a lot of traffic. Kristy Simmons Buettner, an All Trails “Pro” member, reviewed the trail and says, “Very nice trail, still wildflowers out! Super busy trail… but most people are very cordial!” So, if you are looking for some solitude while experiencing a hike, Overlook trail might not be the best trail for you. However, it would be the perfect opportunity to bring your friends and connect with other people looking to adventure and experience the nature side of FoCo.

Another trail recommended by Andrew Nelson is Horsetooth Rock Trail. Nelson says, “Perhaps the most iconic Fort Collins hike is the Horsetooth Rock Trail which takes you to the summit of Horsetooth Rock. It’s around 5 miles round trip with 1500 feet of elevation gain. The views from the top overlook the City of Fort Collins, the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Pikes Peak — 120 miles away to the south.”
