The radical Priest

Reverend Felix Varela was truly a rebel of the New World, and was creating a new kind of newspaper that brought in news on the sandals that affected the people of that era. The priest was truly an advocate and an activist towards democracy, which during that time seemed very limited such that Ferdinand VII had all political power. It wasn’t until Napoleon’s conquest that people from the New World started to emerge from the depths of the upcoming world, and individuals such as the Reverend Varela were the start of the catalyst.

In a time when slavery was still legal and was heavily depended on in regards to the New World, certain countries such as Cuba and Puerto Rico was being defended by Reverend Varela, whom sought out its abolishment. He created a catholic association that targeted the unwanted immigrants of that time, Irish, helping to create schools and services for the poor and working class. Shockingly, this was an individual who sought out ethical justice, but was eventually targeted and silenced.

I was impressed by the initiative the Reverend had to expose the injustices and issues of that modern era by creating a newspaper. The newspaper, El Habanero, is a complete inspiration and proof of the power it can have in bringing out critical issues that govern politics and citizens that read the paper. I wasn’t surprised to find out that such a fast-growing venue would eventually be shut down due to its radical pressure to find change within the minority communities.

The Reverend created awareness and information to minorities that were being misrepresented by the government, recognizing that someone had to tell the truth that was harming the people. I was a bit shocked that the newspaper was bilingual and that it was popular, which tells that many people both Spanish and English speakers were buying and reading these papers.
