5 Basic Things to Pay Attention to When Writing Your Essay

Writing a compelling essay is a crucial part of applying for your dream school. Once you take the effort and put down all your thoughts and stories in a well-structured way, you won’t want small spelling mistakes to diminish the quality of your essay. Using grammar properly can also increase the accuracy of communication and showcase your attention to details. So here are 5 tips as a guide for you when double-checking your essay to make sure you’re not missing out anything.

Check for any spelling errors and typos in your essay! Having the wrong spelling could confuse the reader or even express a different meaning. Although Microsoft Word and some other text editing software have built-in functions that can help you check for spelling errors, sometimes the spelling is not wrong and the system cannot detect it for you. For example, the right word that you are thinking about is “form” but Word does not catch that you wrote “from”. So make sure to go through the essay by yourself again (or multiple times!) or even better have others to check it for you.

Grammar errors are very common mistakes that even native English speakers make. This might include misusing articles (“a”, “an”, “the”) and the rule of their / there / they’re. Also, avoid using slang language as essays should be on a more formal and professional side.

Punctuations can guide the reader in reading your essay with more ease. Putting the right punctuation in the right place can help to increase the readability of text. No punctuation will make a paragraph really hard to understand or make no sense at all, and incorrect punctuation could deliver the wrong message. Keep the punctuation consistent and accurate throughout the article so that you can better communicate your story.

Another area that is often overlooked in writing is quotation marks. It might be less common in essay writing, but if you are using sentences or contents from other sources, it is important to cite your sources with accuracy and clarity. Your essay should be your original work that articulates your own special story.

Last but not least, once you have double, triple checked that there are no mistakes in the contents of your essay, make sure that you have consistent, readable formatting as well. Let the reader focus on the contents of your essay and not be distracted by wired, hard-to-read, or inconsistent formatting.
