Make room for podcasts

As podcasts rise in popularity, platforms are looking for ways to promote their content and grow their audience. The problem is, they aren’t always accessible, and there are many different apps that support podcasts.

Enter Google.

When I looked up one the NYT’s podcast “The Daily” (Note I didn’t even search it very well) immediately, it listed the most recent episodes of the podcast, easily displayed and easy to discover. This makes it a lot easier to view podcasts, because if you press play, it takes you to Google podcasts and plays the selected podcast, within a few seamless seconds.

This is a subtle change in the media landscape, but subtle doesn’t necessarily mean insignificant. From experience and from talking to other podcast listeners, it can be difficult to pin down episodes or even find them. They are less recognizable than song titles, so many times, just knowing the name of the podcast is rarely enough. And once you know the name and the title, you have to find an app to listen on.

It’s not a hard process, but in the 21st century mindset of instant gratification and easy access, it does make it more difficult, culturally speaking.

So what are some implications of this?

According to one Nieman lab article, this could contribute to (loosely) platform wars, meaning, Apple and Spotify and Google will be in competition for podcast streaming.

When these major companies go to war over publishing their podcasts, it could potentially push third-party podcast players out of the picture. With more access to podcasts, people will most likely go with what they see first, or what comes up in, say, a Google search.

Apparently, both Google and Spotify have been testing and designing different ways to make their podcasts more prominent for a few years now.

In an ever changing media landscape, podcasts are becoming more important and popular. So these changes to make them more accessible affects the different platforms that produce podcasts.

The questions I have are:

I know these are small changes, but they could ultimately have a large effect on consumers.
