Challenging obesity is required for all our modern relationship with food. It’s definitely the gravest public health crisis which is less thought of being controlled. Obesity has become one of the neglected problems in the world. India is the third most obese country in the world where 22% of children are affected by it. It is said that 70% of the youth are affected by Obesity. Therefore, I decided to speak on “Teenage Obesity.” You can be considered Obese in simple terms if you are 15 kg extra in your peer group.

Before we start speaking about how a teenage obesity nurtures all kind of health issues. Let us all take a quick glance at the effect of obesity as a whole.

The occurrence of obesity is seen among 300 million people across the world. More prominent are the growing number of obese in India. One-fifth of the Indian women are obese with the age group of 15–49 percent. A disease marked by excessive deposition and storage of fat, with a BMI (Body mass index) of over 30. The risk factors that include are Coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension etc.

Keeping in mind the effects of obesity, I would like to specifically talk about teenage obesity where it can be a reason and has been a reason for severe growth potential. Not being able to be attentive in class or where ever required. Failing in coping up to sports, exercise, not fitting into the favourites clothes, feeling the physical uncomfortableness with your body, and, of course, the society’s say which includes our peer’s taunts and fun making sessions. These all make up the causes of being obese during our teenage days.

Teenage obesity is a puzzling disease. It often gets difficult to understand how the body controls weight even after a proper and limited diet maintenance. In a lay man’s definition obesity is caused due to an excessive amount of junk food consumption.

But the issue is not so simply caused. Obesity can be caused due to certain factors like-

Genes- Obesity may be passed down through families. Having even one obese parent may raise a child’s risk for it. It is definitely an environmental condition but 40% to 70% is heritability. Obesity is commonly classified into subgroups depending on suspected monogenic obesity (extremely severe obesity in the absence of developmental delays), syndromic obesity (clinically obese subjects additionally distinguished by mental retardation, dysmorphic features, and organ-specific developmental abnormalities), and polygenic or common obesity, which affects the general population (but may have associated health risks, such as increased risk of CVD).

Metabolism- Each person’s body uses energy differently. Metabolism and hormones affect everyone in a different way. They play a role in weight gain among teens. We now know that it is an endocrine organ, producing leptin, adiponectin, visfatin, resistin, apelin, etc which modulate metabolic processes in the body. Since obesity is associated with an increase in the adipose tissue mass, these hormones may be expected to be produced in increased concentrations and may thus have a significant impact on the macronutrient metabolism. obesity. This in result aids obesity through metabolism.

Socioeconomic factors- Economic status and obesity have a very strong connection. Obesity is more common among low-income people. In some places, people may have limited access to affordable healthy foods. Or they may not have a safe place to exercise. The knowledge is also less shared about the nutritious food which in result neglects the pangs of obesity.

Lifestyle choices- Overeating and an inactive lifestyle both contribute to obesity. A diet full of sugary, high-fat, and refined foods can lead to weight gain. So, lack of regular exercise. In children, watching TV and sitting at a computer can play a part of being obese among teenager. We cannot neglect the fact that obesity is caused due to a bad or no friend circle, loneliness, lack of confidence, lack of parents attention and support.

Obesity not only affects the physical presence but equally effects our health which can be further classified as the chronic High blood pressure and high cholesterol, it includes the risk of cardiovascular disease. Joint problems, musculoskeletal discomfort, breathing problems, fatty liver diseases, etc.

Weight management programmes are highly recommended to avoid further issues. It is very harmful to both the present and the future and neglecting the whole condition can only take it to worse. Obesity should be well treated before stepping into adulthood as it can cause higher risk factors like stroke, heart diseases. Obese children also face immediate health consequences and a drastic fall in willpower and self-confidence. More than being fat the psychological stress can hamper health to a severe level. Now let us look at the precautions which need to be taken to control, prevent and help teenage obesity.

1. Food habits.

2.Diet Counseling.

3. Physical activities. Most importantly exercise.

4. Behavior changes.

5. Therapies to focus on the undergoing mental conditions and societal challenges from the society.
