The alternative to fixing that wobbly chair is not fixing it at all

LIFE LESSONS | BUDDHISM | JAPAN

(five lessons from the hidden secrets of a wabi-sabi lifestyle)

So you are a creator? A maker? — In a certain way, all of us are.

Life is always full of joy, for makers. What greater fun than to keep on being busy fixing a tap, inventing a new system to keep the rainwater from running down the drain before it had a chance to irrigate your flower beds, do a painting, write a book, magically transform a clump of clay into a pot, build your own furniture, and I do not mean out of an Ikea box.

You are a maker of things. And so am I.

The pleasures of making are a-plenty. But there is a darker side to this too. Where one enters the swampy bogs of one’s desires. The pot that I made is not exactly the pot that I had dreamed of. The book that I wrote is far less than the book in my mind. The chair I built from scratch last week is a bit wonky. The drainpipe I fixed is getting loose again. In my fantasy, I was an able potter. Now it appears that I am merely a maker of pots. With clumps of clay that seem to fancy having a life of their own. I imagined myself as a painter. But it seems that the painting I have spent my heart and soul creating, looks like a painting horribly gone askew.

The book I wrote went outdated. The plant I grew was attacked by fungus. The glass I blew has a crack. The software I coded is bugged.

So does it happen to you too, that you feel like being a maker of things that are just not quite good enough? You too, do you feel like being sucked into the dark and greedy depths of the marshland waters, caught by the demons of disillusion?

If you do, hang on. And if you don’t, wait, because one day you will.
